I am a major fan of durians. I’ve tried durians in ALMOST all forms e.g. cakes, cookies, sweets, chocolates, preserved, tarts, puffs, jam, ice cream … well you get the idea. As a typical Malaysian culture, if not my own culture … to taste the best, you just ought to travel the distance to get them. I just realize, with my vast experience in durian eating – I have never really document them down, which I terribly regret now. But fear not, with my photography in place, I will probably document most of it (if not all) down moving forward.
Sadly having said that I am a durian fan, I can’t really tell the difference between each grade – D24 etc … all I know is that I like soft creamy texture; they are usually a little white-ish in color and may have a slight bitter taste. The smell of course needs to be nicely-pungent (if there is such a word) else it may just taste like potato ~ Ultimate durian tasting involves all three senses, namely the smell, the sight and the taste. Get the idea?
So during the durian season, I will tell the durian seller in hokkien “Uncle, khor eeh oo bor?” (Translation: Uncle, are there any bitter ones?) hahaha. Well selecting a good durian is only the beginning, next dissecting. Getting the durian out of the shell is no easy task; it is usually a D.I.Y process for me and I typically end up with a lot of cuts ~ sad and clumsy … To make LIFE much easier, usually I’ll get the durian vendor to make a cut at the bottom of the durian. From there I’ll pry at the durian’s butt like our cousin primate. On RARE occasion when it refuses to budge, here comes my ‘parang’, well I mean the big chopper! However the durian usually may end up looking like a puree … well that’s where I make some of them into durian jam – hehe.
These days, outsourcing seems to be the “IN” thing, hence to save my delicate skin from getting scarred all the time, I outsourced the durian dissection process. So it’s just as easy as popping over to Jusco! And voila, durian on the fly! (All nicely wrap and ready to be checked out). It may not be the best, but good enough to satisfy my durian craving. Thankfully that doesn’t happen all too often ~ pimples remember!
It is not durian season yet and I am talking about it! Well, so happen I stumble upon this video clip about durian pastries in Karak, Pahang by The Star, looks yummy. Perhaps I’ll pop in when I drive by! (someday…)
