Thai Border - Kampung Wang Kelian

January 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Just last Sunday I went to the Thai border (Wang Kelian) for a visit and ‘shopping’. I bought mainly food items there e.g. deep fried anchovies (ikan bilis), durian cake and 15 packets of instant noodlessss. Hahaha well according to some recommendation they said a lot of visitors buy them in bulks, usually 30 in a box / carton (RM 13.90) – in my case I shared it with my friend.

The journey is almost 3 hours with the last half hour or so going up a winding hill. Me and my gang started off (from Penang island) around 7ish am, stopped by one of the rest area for lunch and reach our destination around 10 am ++. Along the way you will see lots and lots of paddy field, rubber plantation etc, quite a scenic view for photography I might add. I also spotted some white stalks (is this how you spell it?) that I later figure out that it was only white plastic bags – hahaha a cheap version of scarecrow I suppose. Well … there were some REAL birds, some sitting on a tree, some flying ~ no they are not flying plastic bags.

Generally you may not need to use your passport but if you are going there I suggest that you bring along (you don’t want to get stuck in Thai or in the no-man’s-land – between Malaysia and Thailand). Try to get there as early as possible; else you will be shopping under the hot sun. You do not have to worry about currency exchange, most if not all stalls accept either Ringgit or Bhat.
