Did you know that we still have paddy fields in Penang? Many will throw a blank look and go “huh” or “Are you sure?”. Well I am quite sure, as I saw it with my own two eyes. Thanks to another blogger friend, Kampung Sungai Burung was brought to my attention. It is situated on the west part of Penang, the part that is often forgotten or didn’t know it exist. This place was hit badly by Tsunami in 2004, a lot lost their life or home as it almost completely flattens the place. In a nut shell most of the villagers here is either a farmer or a fisherman. In this trip I concentrated mostly the fishing village portion, maybe another time I will pay more attention to the paddy fields. I shall let my pictures do the talking, it is not GREAT but you’ll get the idea.

As I was walking towards the sea (you can go pretty far out as it was low tide), I looked onto the ground and told my friends – “Hey the ground here looks dry and cracked!”, my friend didn’t have enough time to warn me and I was practically screaming as I confidently walk INTO the mud not just once but twice – the second step was a killer it was way deeper and I couldn’t get out of it, too sticky – my friend had to pull me out of it. Euwwwwwww.

Hence this is what happens … the foot spa of the day!

Interested??? Here is the direction
-
Drive to Balik Pulau
-
Upon reaching the market, take the left turn
-
Proceed until you reach the town’s big roundabout (a Y shaped roundabout)
-
Take the 2 o’clock turn (you will pass by the Hospital Balik Pulau)
-
Proceed until you see the sign “Kampung Sg. Burung” (5 to 10 min drive)
-
Look for a right turn
-
You will see another old signboard that says Kampung Sg Burung again
-
After you pass the two Kampung Sg Burung / Perikanan center sign, you will reach a river
-
Follow the river’s side road (narrow, only a car’s width) – you will see lotsa paddy fields around
-
Proceed along the river and you will reach the fishing village
-
Just follow the river and you will reach the destination
-
There is a small food court area over, you may park there
Note:
-
Sun sets around 7 and you have 30 minutes to take your pictures only
-
Be sure to check the weather forecast, cloudy is ok but not heavy rain
Incase you really need a map, just go to google map and plot 5.338967,100.195629. You will find the place.
