What to do during an accident?

November 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments

He is finally back, the plastic surgery was a great success and he is restored to his original look if not shinier. However, I need to wait a few days to ensure there is no water leakage into the trunk area else I might have a colony of mold there. Anyway as soon as I got back Zhai Zhai, I immediately took him out for the long awaited “kai kai” (outing).

Most of us were not involved in a car accident before hence I thought it is important for you (especially ladies) to know what to do incase such incident happens to you (choi!!!). I find that usually in any car accident, our first reaction is either anger, terrified or worried. However always keep in mind that as long as nobody is injured, everything else can be rectified although it may be inconvenient for a period of time. Imagine, if you are hurt or someone is squashed under your car, isn’t that worst. So be thankful that if nobody is hurt, there is no need to scream or shout.

So what do you do?

  • Be calm and do not panic.
  • If there are injuries, call 999 for assistance.
  • If there are no injuries, move your vehicle to a safe area away from traffic, where possible.
  • Note the names and addresses of the other driver(s) involved.
  • Note the model and vehicle registration number of the vehicle(s) involved.
  • Note names and addresses of witnesses, if any.
  • Sketch a simple diagram of the accident scene and the position of each vehicle right before and after the accident (Photos of the accident scene, if available, can be very helpful).
  • Exchange information on the names of your respective insurance companies / takaful operators.
  • Do not discuss on whose fault it was. This may complicate the handling of your claims.
  • If your vehicle needs to be towed, ensure that the vehicle will be sent to the correct workshop. Call your insurance company / takaful operator or its accident hotline number for the appropriate workshop.
  • Report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
  • Inform your insurance company / takaful operator even if you do not intend to make a claim. The third party involved in the accident may make a claim against your insurance company / takaful operator which would cause you to lose your no-claims-discount (NCD).
  • Complete the claims form in full and include any additional relevant information. If in doubt, ask your insurance company / takaful operator for advice.

This is a long list and during the incident you may be in the state of shock and forget everything. If necessary call a friend for emotional support, you may also require someone to give you a lift home.

Most importantly, drive safe and be safe. Everyone has a love one waiting at home.
