Traveling on the North-South highway on the first day of Hari Raya seems to be surprisingly a breeze. Since it’s still early we’ve decided to stop over mid way for lunch. However we’ve missed the usual stop over in Ipoh and decided to check out Bidor (a small district in Perak, approx 2+hours from Penang). Guess what the traffic jam is in Bidor! I think most the folks went back to their home town during this long festive season.
We stopped over at one of the most densely peopled shop – Pun Chun Restaurant. It is extremely difficult to maneuver around the shop and even more difficult to find a seat. Still determine to try out what is all the fuss about, we’ve finally manage to grab a seat after a 10 min of ‘vulture-ing’ (standing & waiting beside the table) and co-shared the table with another group of teenagers.
Obviously I ordered what everybody else ordered – duck soup noodle. While waiting, we bought ‘wu kok’ (deep fried yam with char siew pork filling) as entrée, it looks like one of their best seller too, my friend had to line up just to pay for it. I also noticed that most of the customers do not leave the place without buying a packet or two (usually in dozens) of their famous crispy chicken biscuit – it’s even in promotion, buy 10 packets free 1 packet. Apart from that they carry many other local delicacies such as heong pneah (from Teluk Intan), sek kei ma and many more. I am one of them too; I didn’t walk away empty handed and bought RM 18 worth of biscuits.
Lunch is served approx 20min later, thankfully it wasn’t disappointing – the soup is ‘sweet’ and the noodle is springy, I guess it’s worth the commotion! The bowl of noodle cost RM 6.50 – I consider it as OK since the portions are quite generous. However I don’t recommend trying the char siew wan tan mee, my friend rated it as just moderate.
Pun Chun Restaurant is open daily from 5am to 10pm and they close only on the 1st & 2nd day of Chinese new year. This info may be subjected to changes, call them up if you would like to avoid disappointment.
Sorry I don’t have any pictures of the food, forgot to bring my camera with me.
